February News

Dear Members,

It was good to see a higher than usual attendance at the meeting on the 15th.
Peter White delivered an excellent presentation on Cattleyas and opened our eyes to a few tricks of the trade. It appears that plants can be manipulated to appear more desirable than we could ever hope to duplicate. So buyer beware!

On behalf of NHOS, I would like to welcome new members, Lawrence and Cindy Gray. Lawrence was at Sunday's meeting. We hope to meet Cindy soon.

Tricia Garner has taken over from Graham and Thelma Westmore as the NHOS representative to British Orchid Council. Many thanks to Graham and Thelma for their continual support and thanks to Tricia for stepping in and also for the excellent website and her continuation as IT consultant for the society.

Arthur Wyatt and our President, David Martin ,have still to be presented the awards they should have been given in December 2008. They have been unable to attend both meetings but hopefully, will soon be united with their trophies.
I recently asked for your opinions about the Annual Show,so that the subject could be discussed at the committee meeting held after Sunday's meeting.

There was no positive response received, so it appears that membership is reluctant to become involved in the organisation of a show. Therefore the committee would like to suggest that there will be no expectation to hold an annual show for this year or the near future. This will be reviewed on a regular basis.

A members' sales table is to be introduced at those meetings which do not include the sale of Speakers' plants.
Any kind of plant is allowed. It must be of good quality, pest and disease free and marked clearly with grower's name, identity and price required. The normal 10% from buyer and seller to go to society funds.
The first table will be on March 15th, when Stephen Taylor will be giving a talk on Vandas.

There will be a group visit to Wisley RHS Gardens on Sunday June 7th. Entrance free on this day to NHOS, as is an affiliated society to RHS.
The Summer Event and Plant Auction will be held again this year on Sunday 19th. July, at Monk Sherborne Hall.
Places for both events will need to be reserved beforehand. More details nearer the time.

Will members who have not yet paid their subscriptions for 2009 please pay them before April 1st. After this date, your details may be removed from the database. If you do not intend to renew, please let Ken Mansfield know. Subscription is still £8 single membership, £13 family. Cheques should be made payable to NHOS and posted to the address below, if not attending next meeting.

All the best
