April 2009 Newsletter

Hello Everyone,

Once again I would like to thank everyone who attended the meeting. We have 34 members who have rejoined or joined for 2009, and 24 members came to the meeting and others sent their apologies, which I think is pretty good.

I would also like to welcome Muriel McLay to the society. Muriel won a year's free membership at last year's Summer Event when she attended as Farideh's guest.

Roy White from Thames Valley Orchid Society gave a very interesting talk on paphiopedilums. My hopes were raised when he said that they can benefit from using tap water and don't mind if they are a bit more than moist, as I wondered if this might now have applied to all orchids, but my hopes were dashed very quickly. However, he did make it sound as if paphs are not as difficult to maintain as some other varieties, so perhaps worth another try.

There was a Members' Plants Sales Table which appeared to be very successful and £10.80 was raised for Society funds. There will be another Sales Table at May's Meeting. Any kind of plant welcome.

There is a slight change to the programme in July. Stephen and Ursula Taylor have very kindly offered their lovely garden as the venue for this year's Summer Event on the 19th July instead of Monk Sherborne Hall.
This will be a ticketed event at £5 per head. Food and soft drinks will be provided, but feel free to bring along something stronger if you wish. There will be a plant auction with the usual 10% to society funds.
I will be taking requests for tickets from end of June.

I will also need to have details of those members who wish to take advantage of the free visit to RHS Gardens at Wisley at 11am on Sunday 7th June. RHS want to know numbers by 1st June, so to ensure your places , I need to know no later than Friday 29th May. The best way to contact me is via e-mail- chair.gif - 2951 bytes or post.
I have no answering machine for telephone so allow extra days in case I am not there to receive your call.
There are 55 places available. That leaves 21 places available for guests, who will also qualify for free entry. These places will be issued on a first come first served basis, but there is nothing to prevent members from paying for an extra guest if required.
Please meet outside main entrance by 10.45 so that stickers, etc can be handed out. We have to enter as a group but once inside you are free to do what you wish. There is no time limit for departure.

Our next meeting is on Sunday 17th May, when Hendrelien Peters from South Africa will be giving her talk, 'Potpourri of South African Orchids', which sounds very interesting .

Contact reminders - If you use news.gif - 2687 bytes your message will go to every member, so make sure that is what you want to achieve.
