Newsletter January/February 2010

Dear Members,

I hope you are all getting through this cold spell without too much upheaval and that those of you who grow warm loving orchids are managing to keep them healthy.

As Ken and I will be away for most of February and early March, I hope you won't mind receiving this newsletter in advance. Many thanks to Steven Langston who will be overseeing the February meeting instead.

There are certain subjects that you might like to know regarding the programme for this year. Gill is experiencing some difficulty in filling every date for the forthcoming year, due mainly to the fact that several speakers that have been recruited before have now retired. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find others who speak solely on orchids. It is not a question of fees as the society is willing to pay any reasonable amount for a quality speaker.

However I can detail some of the events planned up to and including April 2010. [Please see website for the rest of the 2010 Programme.]

Sunday 21st February: Malcolm Perry will be giving a talk on Dendrobiums.

Sunday 28th March: This is not the usual 3rd Sunday due to it coinciding with RHS Show at Westminster.
This is going to be an Open Day for the NHOS, in order to try to encourage new members to join the society. The meeting will take place as usual at East Oakley Hall. In attendance will be PLESTED ORCHIDS who will have plants for sale and advice; JUST IN GLASS who make distinctive art from glass and copper; THAMES VALLEY ORCHID SOCIETY who will be displaying a selection of their own members' orchids.
The committee will be running the event and do not expect any member to be involved except in one major way. That is, we would like you to come to the meeting as usual but bring along any orchids you have in flower, so that NHOS can show off our own display on that afternoon.
Guests and public are welcome at this event and there will be no entrance fee. There will be tea/coffee and cakes for sale.
Doors will be open to members from 1pm, so that the committee can arrange your plants and exhibitors have time to set up before we open to the public at 2.45 pm.
Members of the committee will be attending Conkers Nursery at Basingstoke on Saturday 13th March in order to promote this day. Stephen Langston will have posters advertising the event at the February meeting and it would be very much appreciated if you could all take a poster to display on your own local notice board.

Saturday 24th April: There will not be a meeting at East Oakley Hall this month.
Instead of a meeting, there will be a chance to visit the RHS GARDENS, WISLEY. This year, the visit will coincide with the Orchid Society of Great Britain's Show which is going to be held on the same day. Entrance for NHOS members and guests is entirely free. I will need to know numbers of people requiring a ticket before April 16th. There are usually 55 places that the RHS give us for free. So even if you are already a RHS member and can get in for free anyway, it might be beneficial to you if you want to bring extra guests. I can be contacted on

Saturday 10th April: A PLEA.
NHOS have been invited to attend Thames Valley Orchid Show at Hare Hatch, Twyford on this date. Ken and I can attend, but as most of you know, we are not the best of growers !! and it is most probable that we alone will not be able to provide enough plants for the required display. Please let me know if there are any of you who would be able to help, either by coming to Hare Hatch with your plants and setting up or arrangeing for me to collect any that you might lend us.

Arthur Wyatt.
I thought you might like to read a communication from Arthur's wife, Margaret: I am quoting from her letter.

"We were touched to receive the posthumous award to Arthur:please convey our thanks to the NHOS society. Arthur donated half of his orchids to the'Living Rain Forest' nearby. The other half were collected by the Croydon Orchid Society. I just have a few left and a collection of tender plants.
Greetings Mgt Wyatt"
