May 2010 Newsletter

Dear Members,

Once again we are experiencing the vagaries of our British climate. Shorts one day, coats the next. I hope that growers of warm loving plants were not caught out by the late frosts.

Our speaker in May was Roy Smith, who is, in his own words, a bit of a nut about orchids. His subject this month was Phalaenopsis, although he owns a vast collection of many different orchids. His photography was excellent and he gave a very useful video demonstration of cultivation techniques.

The NHOS would also like to welcome new member, Michael Moon, who joined at the meeting, and is, I believe, interested in Phalaenopsis. It is nice to here from Lawrence, Membership Secretary, that almost all members chose to remain members of the NHOS for 2010 and that two new members have joined as well.

Our Treasurer, Ken Mansfield, is still in need of an independent person to audit 2009 accounts. If there is a family member or friend of a member who would be willing to undertake this task, would he/she let Ken know. The person would incur no liability whatsoever to themselves regarding the accounts. These would remain the Treasurer's responsibility. The only requirement would be to audit the account's figures as seen and to agree/disagree with calculations, so that they can be corrected or signed off as correct. A £20 voucher of your choice will be offered by NHOS to whoever would care to undertake the task.

Please remember, when replying to the 'News' site, that your message will go to every member. No problem if general news. The committee members listed below should be able to deal with any of your queries. If you need to contact anyone in particular, because we try to keep your records as confidential as possible, it would be necessary to contact me and I can then obtain permission to give you personal e-mail addresses etc.

Sunday 20th June ------- Peter Mottershead--- Orchids of Cyprus and Alpine Flowers.

Sunday 18th July -------- Summer Event at Monk Sherborne Hall. This is a ticketed event. Price of tickets to be determined but estimate them to be £5-£6. As catering is a major part of the afternoon, I will need to know how many will be coming nearer the date. Friends and family are very welcome. More details later.

August Bank Holiday

Sunday 29th & Monday 30th---- The NHOS has a small stall at the Swallowfield Show in order to advertise the society.

There will be no meeting in August.
