September 2010 Newsletter

Dear Members,

I must start by saying, on behalf of the society, how much we will miss Alan Garner. His was a calming influence at many meetings and he always gave sound advice when required. Our thoughts are with Tricia and her family. Hopefully Tricia may soon feel able to attend meetings again and we look forward to seeing her in the very near future.

I must thank Steven Langston for standing in for me at the last moment at September's meeting and to those who helped where needed. Steve has said that Andy Phillips' talk was very interesting. Ken and I are sorry that we missed it.

There were also quite a few members who could not attend September's meeting because of health issues. I hope you are all on the way to a speedy recovery.

The audit for 2009 has been completed by Linda Phillips and so will be available for discussion at the AGM in December. Many thanks to her for volunteering for this task.

The NHOS had a small table at the Swallowfield Show which was held over the Bank Holiday weekend. The aim was to promote the NHOS in order to attract more members. There was great interest shown by the public but unfortunately, no new members have been forthcoming as yet. NHOS membership is at present 31.

The annual OSGB Show is being held at Wraysbury on 5th November. If you think you may have orchids in flower and can get them along to Wraysbury, please let me know asap, so that an attendance representing NHOS can be organised. A minimum of 15 plants would be needed, in order to create a display of any substance. They must also be in good condition and pest free as they are subject to judging standards. This event qualifies for an attendance allowance from NHOS funds, for up to three cars, to enable members to participate without being out of pocket. However, the allowance will only be given to members dealing with the NHOS display and not for entry into the OSGB judging competition under a personal achievement category.

The next meeting will be on Sunday 17th October when Roy Bailey Wood will be talking about
'Orchids: Their Evolution and Biology'
There will be a Members' Sales Table at this meeting. The normal 10% from buyer and seller to go to NHOS funds.
