January 2011 Newsletter

Dear Members,

Hope you all had a marvellous Xmas and New Year. It was unfortunate that the AGM scheduled for December had to be cancelled because of the bad weather. However it has been re-scheduled for Sunday March 20th 2011. The committee realises that this coincides with the London Orchid Show on the 19-20th. However, as a speaker was not required at this meeting, it was agreed to keep to the original meeting date.

The AGM will take place at the start of the meeting followed by tea and then by a members' participation session. Don't worry, nobody is going to be asked to step up and give a lecture. This will be an opportunity to use the society for the reason most people joined in the first place. That is to discuss any and every aspect of growing and showing amongst ourselves. So please bring along any plant that you would like advice on or just to show off.

The next date for your calendar is NHOS ORCHID SHOW AND CRAFT FAIR to be held on Sunday 20th February 2011.

It has become evident that subscriptions alone cannot keep the society solvent. The amount raised by subscriptions can only cover the cost of hall hire, insurance, fees to affiliated bodies like the RHS, OSGB, BOC etc. The cost of speakers is being funded from the balance which has been accumulated over the years. However this is eroding fast and cannot be sustained at the present rate of expenditure. With hindsight, the staging of an Annual Show has been the mainstay of raising capital to keep the accounts topped up in the past, and this is why the committee have returned to the idea of reintroducing the annual show, albeit on a smaller scale.

The committee is happy to organise this event but we do need your support. We are asking for members to bring along any plants in flower, to be entered onto the NHOS Display. They need to be brought to the hall at 1pm, so that the display can be arranged before the show opens to the public at 2pm. There is a prize for the best in show. You never know. IT COULD BE YOU!

We also need cakes for the refreshments. Home - made cakes are always popular. If you feel that you could make and bring along a few small cakes by 2pm it would be much appreciated. If you are certain that you will be donating some cakes, please let me know, so that I can plan how many I have to buy, thus cutting back on unnecessary expenditure.

A Tombola Stall is also planned but we do need donations of a reasonable quality for this stall. These also would need to be brought along to the hall by 1pm in order for the stall to be set up prior to the public arriving. Again, it would be very helpful to let the committee know if you will be donating items.

Most of all it would be great to have you with us on the day. It promises to be an interesting afternoon. There will be orchid displays from Wessex Orchid Society, Thames Valley Orchid Society and with your help, our own. There is a good mix of crafts on show — Hand- made greeting cards by Serena Coombs; art from botanical artist Nina Krauzewizc; Silversmith Matthew Hitch who produces quality silver items and jewellery; Lisa Cheng who has a range of soaps and lotions and Just In Glass who has a range of copper and glass products. Last but no means least, our orchid trader this year is Laurence Hobbs Ltd, quality grower.

So please try to come along. Entrance is free to NHOS Members. Adults 50p but children with adults will be allowed in for free. The hall will be open from 12-30 to allow for setting up and will open to the public from 2pm until 5pm. Any help you can offer will be much appreciated.

Lawrence Gray will be pleased to accept your NHOS Subscription Renewal at the show. A year's subscription is still 8 single or 13 family membership. Cheques can be made payable to NHOS.

Gill Britnell has sent out the programme for 2011. Speakers have at last replied to her continuing enquiries and she has managed to put together another varied programme. There may be a couple of dates to be filled later in the year but you will be updated on these as they happen.

There is one date to note. Once again a day has been arranged with RHS Wisley for the society to visit the gardens at the same time as the OSGB Spring Show is being held in the Gallery at Wisley. This date is 30th April 2011. There is a mistake in the BOC Golden Guide which states that the date is 23rd April.

I will need to know nearer the time who will want to come. Friends and family also have free entrance under this arrangement. You will have to make your own travel arrangements. The society has been given up to 55 free tickets, so should be enough to accommodate all who would like to visit this fantastic venue.

We have received an invitation from Devon Orchid Society to attend Devon Orchid Weekend in honour of Brian Ritterhausen, from Friday 14th October — Sunday 16th October 2011. Forms and details will be on view at the show for those interested.

I have also been sent a copy of "Great gardens to visit 2011". It is quite a nice book which retails at 12.99. It is currently on offer to members at the discounted price of 5 plus 2 pp. This will also be available to view and order at the show.
